A chickadee takes a short break nestled in a tree burl.

Artist Note: Chickadees are EXTREMELY active birds and don't ever seem to rest much, but I know they must, so I portrayed one.  I wanted to give the viewer a sense of calm, peace, and safety.  This burl is shaped somewhat like an egg, and I imagined that a bird would love to be in there, even if only briefly.

A sleepy western screech owl peers out of her stump hide out.

 

Artist Note: The gray screech owl is a master of camouflage and hides well in tree cavities as it sleeps during the day after a night of hunting.  I love how the feathering with all of the gray cryptic colors move in various directions as the bird fluffs out to sleep.  This was a fun one to paint.
