A male chickadee tries to impress his female friends.

Artist Note:  This commission was a lot of fun to do.  I wanted to have the neutral colors of chickadees emphasized with a white quakie branch.  Having one chickadee highly animated on one side and two resting and sleeping chickadees on the other side gave it a nice balance, and allows the viewer to see two different sides to these very active birds.  The handmade base (apricot wood) came from a tree that was over a hundred years old and planted by Utah Pioneers.  The rich colors bring out the rusty colors on the sides of the birds.

A chickadee takes a short break nestled in a tree burl.

Artist Note: Chickadees are EXTREMELY active birds and don't ever seem to rest much, but I know they must, so I portrayed one.  I wanted to give the viewer a sense of calm, peace, and safety.  This burl is shaped somewhat like an egg, and I imagined that a bird would love to be in there, even if only briefly.

A chickadee searches inside a stump looking for the next meal.

Artist note:  Anyone who knows chickadees will understand how incredibly active and noisy they are while searching for food.  I love their personalities and will probably always be planning the next chickadee sculpture.

In the early darkness just before dawn, an Eastern screech owl settles in for some day time sleep.

 Artist Note: I sculpted the original piece around twelve years ago and kept this first piece of the edition for myself.  I have loved having it around but recently decided that it was okay to let it go.

This piece is now a closed edition meaning that there will not be any other sculptures of this piece available once this final piece sells.

A sleepy western screech owl peers out of her stump hide out.

Artist Note: The gray screech owl is a master of camouflage and hides well in tree cavities as it sleeps during the day after a night of hunting.  I love how the feathering with all of the gray cryptic colors move in various directions as the bird fluffs out to sleep.  This was a fun one to paint.

A white crowned sparrow hops along a tree root looking for a snack.

Artist Note: The white crowned sparrow is one of my favorite sparrows.  The stark black and white crown mixed with the rich reddish brown colors across the back of the bird make a beautiful transition.
